## Pipeline (post-2025 reform)

A typical full-time loop runs:

1. **Recruiter screen** (~30 min). Process intro, leveling alignment, salary expectation. AI / coding role context is set here.
2. **Phone screen** — usually one round, 55–60 minutes. Recent loops report a **packed** screen that splits the hour into 3 segments: 5–10 min behavioural, 30–35 min coding (usually one problem from the recurring `Coding Q` family), and 15–20 min mini system-design or ML-foundation. Staff candidates may get a *two*-phone-screen variant: a coding round and a separate Project Retro (4-axis behavioural deep dive).
3. **Onsite loop** — five rounds, virtual or in-person, often spread over two days. Recent template:
   - Coding (algorithmic, no AI tooling)
   - AI Coding (in-IDE assistant — see the AI Coding Round briefing)
   - System Design (general or ML SD)
   - Project Deep-Dive (40–60 min conversation + diagram)
   - Host Manager / Tech Experience (behavioural + project depth, often with a domain probe)
- A 6th round (BQ-only) is occasionally added for Staff candidates and dropped without notice for Senior.
4. **Team match** — for non-org-aligned candidates, post-loop team-match decides which org makes the offer. Some loops compress this into the host manager round.
5. **Offer / decline / downlevel discussion** — see the Leveling & Downlevel briefing.

## Pre-loop OA (some tracks)

Some new-grad and general SWE tracks add a self-paced, multi-level online assessment (Karat/CodeSignal-style) before the phone screen. As of 2026 it has reused the same problem set from 2025, so prior-year OA write-ups remain accurate — the Recipe Manager versioning/rollback problem is one recurring instance. Notification timing after submission is inconsistent; assume a multi-week gap.

## Calendar time

- Recruiter → onsite is commonly 2–4 weeks; some teams have hit 8-week delays.
- Onsite → feedback is 1 week if positive; ghosting is reported when negative.
- Total end-to-end commonly 4–8 weeks; freezes lengthen this materially.

## Current freeze signal

Multiple candidates in April 2026 reported the interviewer mentioning an internal hiring freeze "not yet officially announced". Expect schedule slips and team-match stalls until this clears. Have a plan B.

## August 2026 loop variants

Current SWE loops do not always follow the five-slot template above. One five-round variant used three conventional coding rounds, one system-design round, and a 45-minute host-manager conversation, with no separate AI-coding or project-deep-dive slot. A Staff platform variant used four rounds: behavioral plus domain depth, AI-assisted coding, CI/CD system design, and conventional coding. Confirm the exact round labels and tool rules with the recruiter instead of assuming every nominal "five-round loop" has the same composition.

## September 2026 phone-screen format

A 60-minute technical phone screen can start with a short introduction and a resume-project discussion, then move into two coding questions. One such session had a lead interviewer and a shadow interviewer. Another phone screen also used two coding questions, so the earlier coding-plus-design split is not universal; confirm the agenda for the specific team.

## September 2026 round labels and track differences

A six-round onsite route includes coding, two system-design sessions, Host Leader, Craftsmanship, and Execution. Another route schedules Technical Communication and Project Deep Dive separately, alongside coding, system design, and Host Manager. Confirm the actual agenda and the purpose of each named session; a familiar round count does not identify its contents.

Applications phone interviews can use a short smoke-test coding question followed by a main problem. An MLE phone screen can instead combine coding with a personalized-feed ML design discussion. These track differences coexist with the two-coding-question format above.

## Late September 2026 formats

A five-round virtual onsite can consist of AI coding, conventional algorithm coding, Host Manager, system design, and Technical Communication. In this format, the Host Manager session combines behavioral questions with resume discussion, while Technical Communication also explores resume projects. The two conversations are separate sessions.

Infra phone screens can place systems and Java fundamentals before the coding problem. A separate phone-screen format uses a systems-fundamentals block followed by two coding questions. These variations further broaden the possible agenda beyond a coding-plus-design split.

LinkedIn's loop pivoted heavily in 2025 — Staff candidates now sit a packed two-round phone screen (coding + project retro) before a five-round onsite that includes an AI-Coding session in CoderPad's assistant pane. Behavioural depth is the dominant downlevel axis; the same coding bar that passes at Senior frequently caps a Staff loop with a downlevel offer.
